Council
for West Virginia Archaeology
Membership
Individuals must be nominated or endorsed by an active member of the Council. After reviewing the candidate's curriculum vitae, the Executive Board, by a two-thirds vote, recommends advancing the application to the membership, which also must approve the application by a two-thirds vote.
Members almost always have a postgraduate degree with a research specialization in archeology or allied field such as geology, history, botany, physical anthropology, cultural anthropology, or cultural resources management. They are concerned with the problems of West Virginia archeology as evidenced by direct employment in or published work on the archaeology of the state. Members are employed and reside within the state generally, but this is not a requirement. While listing on the Registry of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) is not required, members generally meet RPA standards.
In some cases, an advanced degree is not required for membership. However, the applicant must demonstrate equivalent professional qualifications through publications, reports, and experience. These applicants require a unanimous vote by the Executive Board and a two-thirds vote by the active members.
Organizational Liaisons are individuals who are invited to participate in the corporation by virtue of the position they hold in their respective organization or institution. Institutions or organizations with an interest in West Virginia archaeology may petition the Executive Board for a single position within the corporation. A unanimous vote of the Executive Board shall confer organizational liaison membership status.
